The Importance Of Self Defense

The world remains a dangerous place and this is true no matter how strong your efforts are to prevent yourself from landing in a difficult situation. Simply walking down the street and minding your own business can have a frightening result if you come across someone that is thuggish and up to no good. While it is always best to avoid a confrontation, there will be instances where you are unable to. This is why it is so necessary to learn a martial art. Often, those that have experience in martial arts have the potential to survive the situation in a safe manner.

Here is something many people do not realize about martial arts and self defense: self defense is often preventive and martial arts will allow you to avoid having to become involved in a difficult situation that can involve injury. One thing you need to understand is that two-legged predators follow the same strategy of four-legged ones. That is, they attack smaller and weaker foes. When you study martial arts, you are putting your body through an exercise system that develops functional strength. As such, your body will display the appearance of a healthy and strong person. Those are two attributes that a predator will want to avoid. It just makes for too difficult a fight and predators do not wish to engage in such an action. After all, a weaker person that never studied a martial art will come along sooner or later.

Also, not all self defense centers on delivering physical harm to another person. In many instances, proper self defense centers on restraining the other individual. Remember, the law only allows you to perform the amount of self defense to cease a threat to your person. In some cases, you do not want to harm the other person. Martial arts study will teach you how to deal with these problems in a safe manner.

Then, there is the ominous flipside to this problem. Namely, there will be highly serious situations where excessive force is required in order to extricate yourself from a situation. This means your offense and defense needs to be effective. You cannot luck into success in a high stress situation. You need to make the right self defense response. The only way you can do this is through proper training in a martial art. When your person or your life is being threatened, you need to succeed in such a scenario. And you will need to succeed in as quickly and as efficient a manner as possible. Again, only proper training can lead to the right means of saving yourself when things get ugly.

When you are able to defend yourself, you can preserve your very being and that of your loved ones. This is probably the main reason people study the martial arts and probably the most important of all reasons. Self defense is critical to learn. This is an absolute fact.

Tae Kwon Do is the fastest growing martial art and has become the most popular form around the world. Even though the classes teach self-defense and endurance, it also aids in learning how to be self confident. Most issues in today’s society, such as dating issues and problems in the work place, stem from a lack of self confidence. Tae Kwon Do can imbed the characteristics in a person to gain confidence and take control of their lives. Among these characteristics are self esteem, respect, patients, and self control, as well as persistence and a positive attitude.

Building self esteem can come from any thing you do. If you succeed at it, then what you succeed at will help build on your self esteem. Tae Kwon Do insures that every one that participates succeeds by setting standards and goals that are attainable, as well as rewarding the students when they meet those goals. However, if the student does not meet the goals, they are not reprimanded, but advised on how to improve on where they are at. Having self esteem can effect a way a student progresses through the classes, and with a goal of making it to the next level, the students can know that they are accomplishing their goals. Tae Kwon Do students learn together, but the instructors focus on the particular needs of each student.

Tae Kwon Do classes have a strict rule structure that is designed to teach a student respect, not only of other people, but more importantly, for themselves. Tae Kwon Do instructors realize that a person cannot begin to respect other people without first respecting themselves. The basic rules involve punctuality and hygiene. The instructors encourage the students to arrive to class early in order for classes to begin on time. If they fail to do so, there are punishments that differ from class to class. Also, good physical hygiene is not only encouraged, but required. Students are required to keep their hair clean and neat, their clothes clean, and their bodies smelling fresh. Again, if the student fails to adhere to these rules, the instructor will enforce a punishment. Looking good, smelling good, feeling good, and knowing that you are not late can help a student gain respect for themselves as well as create an understanding of how to respect others.

Mastering Tae Kwon Do is not something that is accomplished overnight. The same goes for self confidence. It is not easy to adjust your mind set to knowing that you are a good human being that is worth something. Instructors assist students in understanding the limits of their mind and body and also help in expanding those limits. They also instruct the students and help them understand that these things come in time. Patience is a very important part of Tae Kwon Do. Having the patience to complete a difficult task and the discipline to see it through can broaden the limitations of a students understanding of themselves, as well as others. Acknowledging that they have control over themselves and the things that they think of themselves and others can encourage a positive self image as well as a positive image of the world, which, in turn will help boost a student’s confidence.

Tae Kwon Do: Building an Art Form

Over the years, many forms of martial arts have gained attention for their form and purpose. The more popular martial art forms are from China, Japan, and Korea. Of these regions, the most popular martial art has become Tae Kwon Do. It is a martial art form that originated from Korea. This art form stands out from the other martial art forms because of its differing approach and style. Unlike the other forms, Tae Kwon Do uses mostly the feet and kicking techniques. The name itself, loosely translates to “the Way of the Hand and Foot.” In Korean, Tae means “to break with foot,” Kwon means “to break with hand,” and Do means “the way.”

Tae Kwon Do is the most popular style of martial arts in the world, based on the number of people practicing. Generally, Tae Kwon Do training includes a series of blocks, as well as kicks and punches. Other parts of the training include open-handed strikes as well as take-down techniques, throws, and even joint locks. However, some of the techniques may vary in form according to the instructor and the school. Some instructors also include pressure points into the training.

Tae Kwon Do’s history is rooted in the history of Korea. Tae Kwon Do was an amalgamation of many forms of unarmed fighting styles created by three rival kingdoms in Korea, the Goguryeo, Silla, and also the Baekje. It was here that young men were taught unarmed fighting techniques to help develop their strength as well as survival tactics and speed. The students who demonstrated a natural aptitude for the martial art became trainees in the warrior corps. It was called Hwarang and the “warriors” were taught academics and martial arts, as well as philosophy and a code of ethics. Their military training also included a weapons program that involved swordsmanship as well as archery.

Soon, martial arts in Korea began to disappear into obscurity around the Joseon Dynasty. The society in Korea became centralized with Korean Confucianism. As a result, martial arts were regarded poorly. The societies ideals had been epitomized by their “scholar-kings”. Despite this, around 1945, martial arts schools began to open in Korea using various influences. In 1952, during the war in Korea, an exhibition of martial arts was held and and the different schools displayed their skill in martial arts. One of the demonstrations included a man smashing 13 tiles using a fore-fist punch. After this exhibition, the President of South Korea, Syngman Rhee, had instructed General Choi Hong Hi to instruct the Korean military in the martial arts. Soon, the President of South Korea had the different martial arts schools unify with a single martial arts system.

Tae Kwon Do has been known for emphasizing its kicking techniques. This distinguishes Tae Kwon Do from the other martial arts. The reason for this is because the leg is a longer and stronger weapon then the arm, which gives kicks a better potential to have stronger strikes without successful blocks. Today, Tae Kwon Do students learn the techniques of Tae Kwon Do, as well as anaerobic, and also aerobic, workouts. It also teaches techniques in self-defense, as well as meditation and relaxation exercises.

Salem Martial Arts – Fun For The Whole Family

Anyone that has ever watched a martial arts film is surely familiar with the popular image of the lonely, isolated martial arts master. While such a figure strikes an imposing cinematic image, it is really not indicative of the true realm of martial arts. The study of a martial art is a fun group endeavor that is perfect for the entire family. There are many reasons why studying the arts is so great for the whole family. Here are a few of them:

Any and all family time is good family time. When a family does something together the family is able to bond in a strong manner. This makes for a much more unified family that will live together in a more harmonious manner.

It can also make for a much healthier family. Some may scoff at this notion but it is nothing to scoff at. A healthier family can certainly make for a more harmonious home life since the issue many of the common health problems that plague families are mostly eliminated.

As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. The family can always practice what they learn in class in their home. This not only will allow the entire family to improve their skills, they can do so together and bond in the process. And speaking of skills…

Never underestimate the benefit of martial arts in terms of their ability to keep people safe. Parents worry about their children and children worry about their parents. Sadly, in the world we live in, the safety of a family can be compromised by a number of highly dangerous individuals that seek to do people’s harm. Martial arts can play a large role in keeping a family safe from such predators. No, there is no martial art that will make anyone invincible. However, studying such arts can certainly raise a family’s safety levels. Such a benefit should never be overlooked.

Those parents that would like to see their children develop better concentration and self-confidence through their training. This means their grades will improve and their interactions with other people will improve as well. Then again, why assume such benefits are only valuable to the kids. Parents can certainly benefit from such attribute development also and this can manifest in improvements in their professional and personal life.

Martial arts also provide a gateway into spiritual values. No, this does not mean that a martial art is a gateway into a quasi-religion. Rather, martial arts help one looks inward which is a direct result of the Zen roots. Even when Zen is not directly mentioned, many of its positive components find their way through the expression of the art. This can have many positive benefits on the harmony of the family since such spiritualism is often rooted in maintaining a harmonious existence. Hence, a lot of stress in the household may be limited.

Yes, there are scores of great benefits that can be achieved through the study of martial arts and the entire family can gain from these benefits. That is why martial arts remain highly recommended as excellent family activities.

Is Karate Good For Kids?

Without a doubt, karate remains an outstanding activity for kids to take part in. Martial arts in general have long since remained highly popular among young ones and there are various good reasons for this. What are some of the reasons why karate is the perfect after school activity for kids? Let’s take a look…

Martial arts are perfect for developing discipline in kids. The most important attribute anyone could possess is self discipline because it certainly keeps you out of a lot of trouble. Whether it is something seemingly minor as being a “loudmouth” that blurts things out without control or, worse, something as dangerous as self-abusive habits, undisciplined behavior can yield enormous troubles in life. The earlier a child learns how to embody self-discipline, the better. Sadly, there are few venues in which a child can learn self-discipline. In fact, there are many sources that promote a serious lack of discipline. This is unfortunate but it can be dealt with. Namely, studying martial arts can prove to be the best means of instilling proper, effective discipline in children.

Karate helps develop self-confidence. A person that lacks self-confidence cannot succeed in personal relationships, professional relationships, or life in general. Due to various unfortunate circumstances in life, some will develop poor self-esteem. This is highly unfortunate and, thankfully, the problem can be corrected through the study of martial arts. Karate develops self-confidence on many levels. This may be its greatest attribute.

Goal setting is something many realize is helpful for success in life. However, they lack a means of developing such skills. Karate can prove to be a tremendous way of learning how to develop said skills. Karate is based on a learning progression that aids in achieving skill through setting a series of goals that must be followed. This is symbolized through the belt system that karate uses. Of course, the ability to set goals can transcend just the belt testing phase and into life in general. This is a fantastic attribute found in karate which makes it an excellent activity for kids.

Of course, karate will also help a child learn to defend himself. This is most definitely a helpful benefit with a value that can never be overstated. Why is this so? Children are diminutive in size, strength, and stature. That, sadly, makes them prime prey for a predator. The predator can come in the form of a schoolyard bully or a dangerous criminal. When a child is faced with such a threat, martial arts can certainly aid in their ability to defend themselves against the threat.

Karate is most definitely a great activity for kids. But, it is more than just a mere activity. It can deliver the development of a great many attributes that can help the child all throughout life. Those that are looking to develop their child’s life skills and attributes will most definitely find karate to be enormously helpful.
